Felipe wins Match Play

The team started a match play tournament at the end of the fall season for some intra-squad competition. After a few days of stroke play for seeding, the tournament began but the championship match wasn't completed until last week. First-year Felipe Benalcazar beat ELG 2 and 1, beat Kalen 1 up and beat TY 2 and 1 in the championship match.

Championship Synopsis:

After Felipe got out to a quick start winning the first four holes, TY won 5 and 7 to tighten the match. Felipe birdied 8 to go three up and matched TY's birdie on 9 to keep the lead. TY won the 10th, but Felipe got up and down on the bunker of 11 for the halve and match. (12 hole match due to evening classes)

The Off Season

Johnson Wagner notched his third win on Tour this weekend at the Sony Open. In a post round interview, he discussed how he expected to win early this season because of his off season work.

"I worked hard. I'm not saying I worked harder than anybody because guys work incredibly hard out here. But I worked harder this off-season, me personally than I've ever even dreamed of. I was working out three days a week at home, made three trips to Florida to go see my coach and we just had incredible weather in Charlotte. I love golf, I love playing, I love competing and trying to win tournaments. So I worked really hard this off-season."

Dean's List

Congratulations to Geoffrey Setiawan and Kalen Vos for earning Dean's List honors for the fall. In order to be on the Dean's list, the student must take at least 15 hours and earn at least a GPA of 3.65. Quite an accomplishment, especially since these guys played in all 9 tournament rounds for the semester.

Yoeff is a junior majoring in Marketing and Management.

Kalen is a first-year studying engineering.

With the fall season in the books for all of Division III, the final fall rankings from the coach's poll came out last week. We came in at 23rd. Click here for poll.

According to Golfstat, we are 22. Here are all the Division III teams.

We have a very competitive schedule in the Spring. We will open up in Kerrville, Tx, then play in one of the premier DIII tournaments of the year in Jekyll Island, Ga, then the West Region in Georgetown, Tx and finish off with our conference championship in Mississippi. If we play up to our potential, the national rankings will take care of themselves.

After our final round of the Alamo City Classic, the post-meal discussion somehow turned to foot speed. And the only way to logically solve an argument about speed is an immediate race in an empty parking lot. ED vs. Warren over 80 yards...who will win? #7 at Pecan

The downhill 7th at Pecan is an inviting hole framed by three bunkers. At 200 yards, it can range from a mid-iron to a long iron depending upon the wind, tee and hole locations. After a few days of much needed rain, the course has greened up and looks great.

Our guys hung in there and posted a solid score of 295. Five out of our six guys birdied the 18th to pick up some shots on the field. ELG and Yoeff recorded their first sub-par collegiate rounds with matching 69s. First-year, Kalen Vos had a lights out 31 on the back to finish at -1, 71. We were the first groups off the course and the field scores should be posted on golfstat and our athletics page soon.

We opened up the season with a big win. I was really proud of the way our guys played. The first-years stepped up and played some great golf right out of the shoot. Our guys managed their games well, made a bunch of birdies and competed for all 54 holes.

In Luke Donald's press conference before the US Open this year he explained his rise to #1 in the world.

"And in the last few years I've just tried to go back to basics about just trying to improve every day, just trying to get a little bit better at every component in my game ... Former D3 Player wins US Senior Open

Olin Browne won the US Senior Open at the end of July providing an explanation point to a great career, despite its inauspicious start. Below is an excerpt from the article. There is more than one way to get to the show.

"It couldn't have happened to a less likely guy. When he tried out for the Division III Occidental College team as a freshman, he shot 88 and 89 yet still made that shorthanded squad. He worked in the bag room at New Seabury Resort, a course on Cape Cod, that summer and decided then that he would become a professional golfer, leading to a long and determined road that featured only one successful try in his first 10 trips to Q school."

Daniel Maurer was our lone senior on the squad last year. He earned Dean's list honors this spring and graduated in May. He is planning to continue his education and attend dental school. Despite the three knee surgeries over the past two years that severely limited his playing and practice time, Dan had a great attitude and made a positive impacted on the program.

After the first round we were in second place behind Oglethorpe, the eventual champions. We dropped to 5th after our poor second round and remained there after final round. The conditions were tough with 20+mph wind each day. Full field results can be seen here.

Played at Atlanta National Golf Club in Alpharetta, Ga., Trinity University wins the 1994 SCAC Men’s Golf Championship, breaking a 24-year-old conference record for largest margin of victory with a 40-stroke win over runner-up Sewanee-The University of the South. In the longest playoff to determine medalist honors in SCAC history, Trinity's Derek Birkeland defeated teammate Tom Ming on the fourth playoff hole to earn SCAC Golfer-of-the-Year.

For the first time in league history, the SCAC sends more than one team to the Division III Men's Golf Championship. SCAC champion Oglethorpe University is joined by Trinity University in the field of 23 teams at the 2003 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships in Delaware, Ohio. On the final day of competition, Oglethorpe shoots the second-lowest round of the day (287) to jump from 11th place after three rounds to finish in sixth while Trinity, playing in its first NCAA golf championship in 28 years, finishes in 18th after a final-round 318.

Thanks to the alumni that were able to come out and compete against the squad at Pecan Valley. It was great seeing some old faces and playing some golf. ELG played some great golf with 7 subpar strokes on the second day alone! His T1 performance is the best by a first-year since I've been around the program. We have a lot to work on as a team, but the improved second round was a great step in the right direction.

Short Game Revolution

Now that spring practice has begun, the team has been working hard on their short games. We identified that as an area we need the most improvement in, so we are organizing our practice time accordingly.

Swing Change

Some of the guys are making changes in their swing in order to produce a better ball next semester . Below are some pictures of Blake Turner compared to a good friend of mine, Anthony Broussard, who has had success on the mini tours and is 2 for 2 advancing through the 1st Stage of PGA TOUR Q School.

Both Blake and Anthony have the club on the shaft line for most of the downswing. In this screenshot, they are in similar positions.

In the follow through, you can see a big difference between their swings. Blake stops rotating his body and swings his club above the shaft line, which starts his ball right of his intended target. Consequently, in order for his shots to return to the target, he must shut down his clubface and he does this by rotating his forearms very quickly around the impact zone. When timed up correctly, his swing produces a nice draw. The problem with his swing is when his timing is off, even just a little bit. When the forearms rotate too slowly, the face is open, resulting in a push cut. When the face is square, he hits a push. When he rotates the face too much, he hits a hook. And when he doesn't shallow the club onto the shaftline on the downswing, he hits a pull draw. These two-way misses make it very difficult to swing freely and score consistently.

Anthony on the other hand, rotates both his hips and torso much more through impact allowing his club to stay on the shaftline on the follow through. He does not have an active release of the clubface, which allows the face to be square much longer through the impact zone. Since his plane and clubface are great around impact, he hits a straight ball that starts online. It also allows him to work the ball without altering his swingplane, just merely leaving his clubface open a fraction for a cut, or closing it down a bit for a draw. This is one of the reasons he plays this game for a living.

Blake has been working hard in the off-season to make his swing more repeatable and he is looking forward to some better results next semester.

We are trying to eliminate the “blow-up” holes, and become a more consistent team. Despite the mild winds and sunshine, Stonetree Golf Club proved to be a lot of golf course. Only one player broke par carding a 71. We tee off this afternoon starting at 11:40. We are third among DIII teams, 3 back from host UMHB and 14 back of Southwestern. With OB and lateral hazards on most holes, the course provides an excellent opportunity for a reshuffled leader board by the end of the tournament.

The Trinity University Women’s Golf team started their season off with a great start, with a tie for third with a two day total of 662. On the second day of the tournament, the team score was 318, the lowest team score the women have had in years! The Trinity women have two Molly’s on the roster this year and both had an awesome showing this week. Molly McCarthy led the team with an 84, 77 followed closely by Molly Zumbro with an 81,81. Other notable scores were a 78 from Hannah Goodwin and an 82 from Emma Herzog. The women are looking forward to their next tournament in two weeks hosted by the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

JA earns second All-American Scholar Award

JA was awarded his second All-American Scholar award by the Golf Coaches Association of America. This award is given to student-athletes (juniors and seniors only) who excel both on the course and in the classroom. He graduated with a degree in economics and finance with a GPA over 3.6 and stroke average of 75.45. He is the first two-time winner of this award in Trinity's history.

TU Wins the ConCan Intercollegiate Classic

Our men's team competed in the Texan hill country at ConCan Country Club this past Monday and Tuesday. After a lackluster opening round of 312 leaving us in second place by 5 strokes, we played much better Tuesday posting a 301 and winning the tournament by 11 shots. Jonathan Alden posted the only under par round for the tournament, shooting 69 to take medalist honors. The Big Fella had to WD due to a wrist injury. Unfortunately, he will miss the Jekyll tournament in attempts to have him ready to play at the West Region.

JA Wins Again!

JA, Jonathan Alden, played a phenomenal round Tuesday shooting a 69 to win the medalist honors at the ConCan Intercollegiate Classic despite a couple setbacks. About 20 minutes before his tee time Monday, his driver snapped while he leaned on it to pick up a tee. Fortunately, he brought an extra driver to the tournament. I ran back to our lodge and got his driver with enough time for him to hit a few balls on the range with it. On the way to the first tee, we talked about how great a story it is going to be when he wins the tournament after breaking his driver on the range the morning of the tournament's first round. A lot of kids would have been flustered about breaking their driver, but JA was looking forward to competing- to teeing it up and posting a score.

With an unusually cold winter for the hill country, the greens were not in good shape for our tournament, making holing putts extremely difficult. Fast and bumpy greens are tough to putt, especially when they have a lot of contour. JA was like most of the players in the field on Monday, having numerous three putt greens and failing to convert good birdie chances. Consequently, he posted a disappointing 79. A lot of kids after posting a high score in round one would have been disappointed, thinking that they shot themselves out of the tournament. JA thought he hit the ball well and just needed to improve his putting and he would be right there come Tuesday afternoon. So he went straight to the putting green after his round to get to work.

JA continued his good ball striking Tuesday and putted much better. After stuffing a 9 iron on his final hole to two feet, he made the birdie putt to finish off his round of 69. His great story was complete.

JA is a great golfer and a better guy. I'm looking forward to the rest of his senior year.

The First Tee of San Antonio

The members of men's and women's golf teams volunteer at The First Tee of San Antonio at least once each semester. The First Tee is a national organization that has introduced golf to millions of kids. Their mission is "to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf."

The round got off to a slow start as fog blanketed the course and caused play to start and stop. When the fog burned off, the winds picked up and made controlling the ball difficult. Warren got off to another poor start, but played brilliantly coming home. Another great tournament for the first-year. Chase "the big fella" Clayton played a a solid tournament matching his ball striking with some solid work on the greens with his newly found belly putter. Barry's putting showed marked improvement the second round and will continue to be a point of emphasis in practice. JA actually played well with 13 clubs- his driver cost him a lot of penalty shots. And Nash-- we are just happy to get him back form the border patrol checkpoint in Sarita. That was a close one.

All in all, a second place finish and a fun trip to South Texas.

Hi,

My name is Emma Herzog and I am from Katy, Texas. This year I am a junior at Trinity, studying Marketing, Management, and Geology.

This past semester I studied abroad in Vienna, Austria. I studied through a program called IES and focused my studies to Business, Music, and German. While I was in Vienna I had the opportunity to travel Italy, Paris, Slovakia, Hungary, and Thailand. One of the highlights of the semester was being able to ski the Alps during the Thanksgiving holiday.

While I was in Vienna, I also had the opportunity to intern at a local consulting company called “Schwarzconsult”. The internship gave me the unique opportunity to actually experience the difference between European business and American business, plus it enabled me to practice my German. Studying in Vienna was a great experience- I learned a lot, got to experience a new culture, and had many opportunities to travel to surrounding countries!

These are a few things you should do to make your desire to play college golf a reality.

1. Become a better golfer. In order to improve, you need to assess your game. What are your strengths? What do your teammates/competitors do better than you? Ask your golf instructor want you need to work on. Formulate a plan with actionable steps to make you a better player. Implement the plan immediately.

2. Play tournaments. Play high school events, city events, play a local tour, play qualifiers for state and national events and play amateur events.

3. Win golf tournaments! Coach Herm Edwards explains it well here.

4. Create a golf resume and swing video. Include contact information, pertinent academic information, tournament results (tournament name, date, scores, finish, course, par and course rating) and golf pro’s name and number. Add a link to your swing video.

5. Research potential schools. Look at the university’s requirements for admission, areas of study and golf website. Are you a fit academically and athletically?

6. Send an email to the coach articulating your interest in the program. Attach your golf resume.

7. Focus on #1.

Men's Spring Schedule

As our student-athletes prepare for their fall exams and Christmas break, I'll take a look forward to our upcoming spring semester. Our season will begin late January as practices and workouts start-up.

Our tournament schedule kicks off in Laguna Vista, TX at South Padre Island Golf Club in a 54 hole event hosted by University of Texas at Brownsville on Feb. 21-22. This is our first year playing in this tournament and we are looking forward to the trip south.

We have a couple weeks off and then play during our school's spring break at TLU's spring tournament in Con Can, TX on March 15-16. We took 3rd place last year and will attempt to improve upon that finish with a course our guys are familiar with.

We have one day off and then we are catching a plane to head to Jekyll Island, GA to play at Oglethorpe's tournament March 19-21. This tournament has one of the best fields of the year. From last year's field, there are 6 teams in the 10 and 10 of the top 25 from the latest coaches poll (GolfWorld/Nike Golf). I am excited to see where we will stack up.

Our next tournament is the West Region hosted by Southwestern on April 12-13. This will have another great field with 8 teams in the top 25. We will play at TerraVista Golf Club in Round Rock, TX. If the wind blows like it usually does, it makes for a grueling 54 hole event where par is a great score.

Our SCAC Championship will be held in Stone Mountain, GA at the Stone Mountain Golf Club on April 22-24. With a bid to nationals and our conference championship on the line, there will be plenty to play for.

The NCAAs will be in Hershey, PA May 10-14. If we play up to our potential, we have the game to compete with anyone in the country. We have a lot of work to do between now and then, but I think this group of guys is willing to put in the time and effort.

Women's Team Fall Recap

The women's team has shown a lot of improvement over the fall semester. We competed in three tournaments this semester finishing 7th, 11th and 5th. We expect continued improvement as the women get more comfortable implementing the swing changes we've worked on. The women are working hard on their short games because that is where the scoring happens.

Next semester we look forward to more competition as one of our sophomore returns from studying abroad. Our spring schedule looks good, playing three tournaments in Texas and two in Georgia. Look for us to play better in the Spring.

Men's Team Fall Recap

Thanks for your interest in our golf program.

The men have put forth a great effort this fall. And with that effort, came good results.

In our opening tournament, our team finished third, playing well shooting 291, 290 and 285. Jonathan Alden, a senior, carded a 71, 71 and 67 and was tied for the lead at -7. He won the playoff on the first hole, securing his first collegiate title. Jonathan has played very well over his career and it was great to see him put together three great rounds.

In our final tournament, The Alamo City Classic, we won by seven shots. Our first round we shot a season low of 284 and followed that with a 292 to finish at even par. I was extremely proud of the way our guys competed despite the rain and soft course conditions on Tuesday. Ryan Barry, a sophomore, shot -4 (69 71) and finished in a three-way tie at the top. He won the playoff in dramatic fashion birdying the second and third playoff holes. It was his first collegiate victory and it was awesome to watch.
